Heated Debate over Community Alert signs

It's emerged the local authority has a charge to facilitate such signage being errected by communities hoping the scheme in rural areas will act as a deterent to criminals.

North Tipp doesn't impose a levy and South Tipp officials says they will review the matter.

The issue was raised by Fine's Gael Joe Brennan, who fears a cost could hamper community efforts.

Other councillors like Pat English and Denis Leahy feel that a sign is no subsitute for a garda and won't be a deterent anyway

However, Mary Hanna Hourigan feels its being blown out of proportion.
