Winter vomiting bug at UHL

Strict visiting restrictions have been put in place at University Hospital Limerick following an outbreak Norovirus

Three cases of the winter vomiting bug have been confirmed today while there are a number of other patients showing symptoms.

All visitors have been banned from Wards 3A and 1A in an attempt to contain the virus at the hospital which serves North Tipp, Clare and Limerick.

Elsewhere in the hospital, visitors are restricted to one person per patient and management have people asked not to bring children on visits.

All infection control measures are in place and patients with the virus are being isolated as appropriate.

UHL has been experiencing a high numbers of patients on trolleys recently – it was the busiest hospital in the country today with 46 people waiting for a bed.

The hospital has asked the public to avoid the Emergency Department unless it is a genuine case.

People with symptoms of the bug are advised to contact their GP and avoid presenting at the Emergency Department at UHL.
