Over a quarter of General Practitioners in Tipperary will reach retirement age in the next 7 years.

Today’s Irish Independent reports that the Premier County will be one of the worst hit over the coming years.

27% of Tipperary’s GP’s are set to retire by 2024.

Already the HSE has struggled to fill vacancies in Bansha and Thurles due to the shortage of doctors willing to take up practices.

Leitrim is worst hit, with almost 1 in every 2 doctors expected to step down there within the next seven years.

Chair of the Oireachtas Health Committee Dr Michael Harty says the retirements will be particularly bad for older patients.
