The lack of psychiatric beds in Tipperary is said to be contributing to the high number of suicides in the county.

The claim comes as the HSE launched ‘Connecting for Life’ – a suicide prevention action plan for the Mid-West, which includes North Tipperary.

The vision for the plan is to have a region where fewer lives are lost through suicide, and to empower communities and individuals to improve their mental health and well-being.

A number of key areas specific to North Tipperary have been identified for attention.

These include the travelling community; domestic, sexual and gender-based violence, and current service users.

Speaking at the launch Tipperary TD Jackie Cahill highlighted the lack of facilities in the county.
