The authority found that supervision arrangements at Nenagh Hospital need to be improved.

However the health watchdog has given the hospital a generally positive review following an inspection last August.

The unannounced inspection of Nenagh Hospital found that infection prevention at the hospital is significantly under-resourced.

The Health Information and Quality Authority found that while the hospital was generally clean, there needed to be better supervision arrangements at the hospital – a point HIQA had made previously.

During the visit on August 17th inspectors spoke with hospital managers and staff as well as members of the Infection Prevention and Control Team.

HIQA inspectors requested and reviewed documentation and data and observed practice within the clinical environment in a small sample of clinical areas which included the Infusion Centre and a medical ward.

An inspection of Cork University Hospital found that while there were gaps in the prevention of infection – the hospital did achieve 90% hand hygiene compliance.

Beaumont Hospital in Dublin was found to have an exemplary infection management system; however HIQA says management need to address the hospital’s insufficient bed capacity and lack of isolation rooms.
