Green light for National Maternity Hospital

Planning permission has been granted to build the new National Maternity Hospital on the campus of St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin.

The decision means work on the €300 million project can now go ahead.

The new facility on the site of St Vincent’s hospital will ultimately replace the existing maternity hospital at Holles St in the city centre.

In a decision published today An Bord Pleanala says the proposed location and design is the most appropriate solution for maternity care and it does not believe the development will have any significant impact on residents or traffic.

The new 244 bed hospital will be 5-6 storeys in height, and includes an extension to the existing multi-storey car park on the campus.

The permission comes months after controversy over potential religious ownership.

It ended with the Sisters of Charity ending involvement with the St. Vincent’s Healthcare Group.
