Green light for Meehan to fight murder conviction

A court has ruled Brian Meehan can proceed with his bid to have his conviction for the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin declared a miscarriage of justice.

The Director of Public Prosecutions had applied to have the case struck out before the hearing.

Brian Meehan claims new facts from the trial of drug dealer John Gilligan will show his conviction for the murder of Veronica Guerin is a miscarriage of justice.

He was jailed by the Special Criminal Court which found it was the pillion passenger on the motorbike he was driving that shot the Sunday Independent journalist in her car in 1996.

The DPP claims this latest appeal is wholly without merit.

However the Court of Criminal Appeal has found the Director's attempt to have the case thrown out before it’s been heard is misconceived.

That word ‘misconceived’ cropped up again as the court rejected the director’s second request to determine whether the case is an abuse of process before any orders allowing documents to be disclosed to Brian Meehan.
