Freedom of Information to apply to Irish Water.

Irish Water, which is headed up by Terryglass native John Tierney, will officially become subject to Freedom of Information law from today.

A special procedure is being rushed through the Dáil so that the new utility will be subject to Freedom of Information requests, without the need for a full change in the law.

The rules, being proposed by the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Brendan Howlin will be retrospective, and take effect from last July.

The move could help to shed more light on the extent to which cabinet ministers were aware of the utility's spending on consultants.
