Farmers to pay the price for Shannon – Dublin pipeline

Irish Water and the Government have been accused of city centric planning when it comes to the Shannon Pipeline project.

The €1.2 billion project will see water taken from the Parteen Basin in North Tipperary through a 170 kilometre pipeline to Dublin.

The Dublin area has a leakage rate of around 50% – and instead of replacing the pipes in Dublin, water is set to be taken from the River Shannon.

This would cause major disruption for landowners along the proposed route – not only during the build, but long term.

Donal Whelan of the River Shannon Protection Alliance says the Government and Irish Water are afraid of bringing Dublin to a standstill, but that’s going to cause rural Ireland to suffer.
