Event to mark those missing in Ireland

The families of some of those still missing gathered in Dublin this morning to mark National Missing Persons day.

Jimmy O'Neill went missing from Waterford City in 1947 aged 16. His is the longest running unsolved missing person’s case – his brother Frank says that he just wants to know what happened to Jimmy.

It’s something that torments many families who are still waiting to hear from loved ones who have vanished without a trace.

Of the official Garda figure of over 9000 – 203 missing person reports were filed here in Tipperary – 172 were deemed high risk cases but all persons in the premier were subsequently located.

Nationally though 100 people who vanished in 2014 – remain untraced

Dermot Browne from the missing person’s helpline says it can be hard to understand the anguish families go through.

He was speaking at a special event in Farmleigh today to mark National Missing Persons Day – with the event hosted by the Justice Minister and the Garda Commissioner Noirín O’Sullivan.
