Waste charge row rumbles on

The Taoiseach has played down the row over the new bin charges – saying most of the country already pays them.

Leo Varadkar says over half of Irish homes already pay for their bins either per kilogram or for every time they’re lifted.

It’s ahead of a Dáil debate tonight on a Fianna Fáil motion calling for an independent waste regulator to audit possible charges.

Environment spokesman Timmy Dooley says many of the 60 or so waste collectors use the same facilities to destroy the waste.

Labour meanwhile are tabling an amendment to Fianna Fail’s motion, calling for the EPA to be the waste regulator.
