There are reports a person has died in Hurricane Ophelia in Tipperary.

It’s understood the tragedy happened in the south of the county this morning.

A woman in her 50s has been confirmed dead after a tree fell on her car in Aglish in West Waterford – a female passenger in her 70s has been taken to University Hospital Waterford with non-life threatening injuries.

The storm – the worst to hit Ireland in over 50 years – is currently making its way across the Premier.

It’s brought down trees and caused power outages right across the county.

Tipperary man Sean Hogan is National Director for Fire and Emergency Management and is the Chair of the National Emergency Co-Ordination Group.

He says Ophelia has the power to cause serious injury.
