Redevelopment of Clonmel Arms a “game changer”

There’s been a broad welcome for plans to develop a new hotel in Clonmel town centre.

The former Clonmel Arms site has been lying idle for many years and had become somewhat of an eyesore with considerable damage caused to the interior of the building.

The building on Sarsfield Street was sold by NAMA earlier this year.

Fianna Fail Councillor Siobhán Ambrose says the news that the new owners plan to reopen it as a hotel is huge news for the town.

There have been a number of false dawns for the site in recent years.

There had been talk of a multi-storey car park and a retail development but none of these came to fruition.

The new owners will be meeting with planning officials from Tipperary County Council shortly to discuss his proposals for a 120 bed hotel before submitting a planning application.

District Administrator Anthony Coleman says the redevelopment of the Clonmel Arms will tie in with a number of other projects planned for the town.

Clonmel already has three hotels – the Minella, Hearn’s and the Clonmel Park which between them provide 215 beds.

However Siobhán Ambrose says having another one in the centre of the town will benefit businesses in the town centre.
