Criticism of ending of Clár programme.

A North Tipperary Councillor has described the ending of the Clár programme as another attack on rural Ireland.

Fianna Fail's John Carroll has expressed his disappointment at the closure of the scheme which was aimed at ensuring that scattered isolated rural communities were given basic infrastructure.

Councillor Carroll says the Clar programme provided massive support for rural communities across Tipperary and in many instances leveled the playing field in terms of access to funding and services.

Environment and Local Government Minister Phil Hogan recently informed the Dáil that the scheme has been wound down.

John Carroll describes this is a retrograde step and shows the lack of priority being given by the present Government to rural Ireland coming as it does in the wake of changes to the pupil/teacher ratio in small schools and the closure of Garda Barracks and Courthouses.
