Man arrested on Tipp/Offaly border following huge cannabis seizure

A man is being questioned a Nenagh Garda station in connection with a major drugs haul.

The arrest was part of a major operation involving a number of agencies targeting organised criminal activity.

Cannabis with an estimated street value of €730,000 was recovered on Friday last during the search of a truck containing farm machinery which had arrived into Ireland at Dublin Port.

Revenue’s new mobile x-ray scanner was used in the search – the cannabis herb was discovered concealed within the farm machinery.

The seizure came as part of a joint investigation being conducted by the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, the Serious Crime Task Force and Revenue’s Customs Service.

Follow up searches were subsequently carried out in the Moneygall area yesterday and a 52 year old man was arrested in connection with the investigation.

He is currently being detained at Nenagh Garda Station on suspicion of drug trafficking.
