A Garda is being treated for injuries received after he was dragged by a four-wheel drive during an incident in Birdhill.

The vehicle was being driven by a suspected drink driver at the time.

Gardaí were alerted to a possible drink driving incident in the Birdhill area last Friday evening.

When they arrived at the scene they observed a man entering a four-wheel drive vehicle who subsequently failed to stop.

CCTV footage shows the driver lost control and collided with a road sign at a junction in Birdhill.

A Garda approached the vehicle at this point but the driver made off with the officer holding onto the passenger door before losing his grip after a few seconds.

The guard suffered a broken ankle and head injuries along with a number of cuts and bruises in the incident.

He was taken to University Hospital Limerick where he is still being treated.

A man in his 50s was later arrested in connection with the incident.
