Conditions at Clonmel Garda station highlighted on Tipp FM

The deplorable conditions being endured by Gardai in Clonmel have been highlighted on Tipp FM.

On a walk about of the station for Tipp Today, Gardai highlighted some of the dangers at the station on Emmet street.

The Clonmel station was built in 1870 and was used for a time as an RIC barracks and then as a Garda Station.

There are plans for a new Garda Station at the Kickam Barracks site. However there is no date for commencement of the project although contracts are expected to be signed in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, Minister for the OPW Kevin Boxer Moran announced funding for interim works to imrpove shower and toilet facilities as well as plans to rent space in an adjoining building to help relieve over crowding.

But while this funding is welcomed, staff at the station have called for the building to be made safe.

Speaking on Tipp Today, Garda Liam Tobin says that safety in the event of a fire is a huge concern

While Garda Michelle Cahill says that for people working in certain parts of the building, there would be no escape in the event of a fire.
