Concern at failure to replace Garda vehicles

A Tipperary T.D claims the policy of not replacing decommissioned Garda vehicles is a worrying trend.

Fine Gael's Tom Hayes is concerned that while rural communities across the country are seeing an increase in crime, squad cars are automatically being decommissioned with no sign of newer vehicles taking their place.

The Golden based T.D points out that less Gardaí having to patrol larger areas means a massive increase in the amount of mileage being racked up by individual vehicles.

Under the current system once a patrol car has clocked up 300,000 kilometres it is automatically taken out of service.

This policy would be fine according to Deputy Hayes if the local Gardaí were to receive a replacement car but that’s not happening in the current climate.
