Commissioner says there is no special treatment for anybody on penalty points

The head of An Garda Siochana has denied that high-profile people are given special treatment over their penalty points.

Commissioner Martin Callinan says everyone is treated equally when they ask to have a driving offence quashed.

He says the procedures around penalty points have been tightened up since an internal report into how offences can be written off.

But he says the system is fair and there is no special treatment for anybody.

No matter who you are – whether you're a politician, whether you're a sports personality, whether you're a dignitary or a VIP of whatever description – if you're a citizen of this country and you feel that you have a genuine entitlement to petition an authorised officer involved in the decision-making process” he said.
