Cappawhite samurai sword attacker had previous assault conviction.

A Tipperary man is to be sentenced in July for an attack with a samurai sword.

27 year old Liam McCarthy of Church Street, Cappawhite pleaded guilty at Clonmel Circuit Criminal Court to assault causing serious harm during the incident in March of last year.

He also pleaded guilty to violent disorder.

His victim – 49 year old Martin Butler – was left partially paralysed and unable to talk as a result of the attack.

McCarthy had consumed two vodkas, six cans of cider and two pints of lager before the assault.

Mr Butler spent over a week on a life-support machine.

The court heard that Liam McCarthy had a six-month prison term for assault suspended just three months before the savage attack on Martin Butler.

Sentencing for the Cappawhite assault will take place in July.
