Calls for more powers in relation to derelict houses

The issue of derelict housing has once again been raised by Tipperary councillors.

A number of councillors of the Nenagh Municipal District called on Tipperary County Council to forward the issue to the Department of Environment, stating that the legislation isn’t strong enough to make progress.

They say that council inspectors need more power to enter run down buildings in order to complete a full inspection of the properties because landlords are covering up the extent of the problems by boarding up the houses.

This results in valuable housing in the county is left unused while there is a housing crisis.

Sean Keating, Director of Environment and Change Management at Tipperary County Council, says its not an issue.
