Call for boil water notice compensation to be extended to other users.

Water charges come into force next month with the first bills due in January.

The news that households on a boil water notice for more than three months will not have to pay a supply charge is of little comfort to some residents of South Tipperary.

The Commission for Energy Regulation is said to be considering further compensatory discounts for homes with water that's not fit for human consumption.

The regulator will announce next week discounts of either 50 percent or 100 percent off the water supply charge element of their bills – depending on whether their water is undrinkable for less than or more than three months.

Councillor Marie Murphy says this will be little consolation for people in the Skeheenarinky area near Cahir who have had a boil water notice in place for five years.

Meanwhile problems with a hard water supply are causing difficulties for thousands of people across the county.

Marie Murphy feels they should be compensated in some way as well for the expense of installing water softeners.
