Annual Famine Walk in Ballingarry to be Led by Choctaw Native

The 13th annual Famine Walk takes place in Tipperary later today.

This year’s event will mark the support of a native American Tribe for the Irish people during the famine of 1848.

Waylon White Deer of the Choctaw First Nation in the United States will lead today’s walk at 3pm in Ballingarry.

The walk aims to commemorate those who died in the great famine bewtween 1845 and 1848 and also the 1848 Rising which took place in Ballingarry as a result of the potato blight.
