51 year old convicted of child abduction escapes jail

A Waterford based academic convicted of abducting and falsely imprisoning an 11 year old boy has escaped jail.

Dr Thomas Pfeiffer of Coolfin, Portlaw was sentenced to a suspended 3 year jail term for the offences five years ago.

During his trial the court heard the 51 year old picked up the 11 year old at Dublin Airport in January 2009 and drove him to his home –

The child had travelled from Berlin to Ireland to improve his English and was due to stay with a South Tipp family.

But Dr Pfeiffer lied to the boy's mother and told her he was staying with another family before going to the designated host in Carrick on Suir.

The court heard the boy felt he had been imprisoned in the house for the two days, and even though there had been no physical or other abuse, the boy was deeply changed and had lost trust in people.
