36 year old in court charged with Dublin murder

A 34-year-old Italian man has appeared in court charged with the murder of Tom O'Gorman in Dublin.

The 39-year-old was stabbed and severely beaten at his home at the weekend.

Gardaí believe he was killed as a result of a dispute over a game of chess.

Gardaí were called to Tom O'Gorman's home at Beechpark Avenue in Castleknock at around 2 o'clock yesterday morning – where they discovered his body.

The 39-year-old – who worked at the Iona Institute suffered extensive injuries – including stab wounds.

He was killed after a row broke out over a game of chess.

Tom O'Gorman's lodger Saverio Bellante was arrested at the scene.

The 34-year-old – who's originally from Palermo in Sicilly – appeared in Blanchardstown District Court this morning – charged with murder.

Detective Serg Patrick Traynor from Blanchardstown Garda Station told the court that Saverio Bellante replied ‘I am guilty’ when charged and cautioned.

The defendant told the court that he wants to represent himself.

Judge David McHugh ordered that a medical assessment be carried out on Saverio Bellante – who has been remanded in custody to appear at Cloverhill Court on Jan 17th
