The White Helmets have been announced as the winners of the 2016 Tipperary Peace Prize.

The Syrian based group are being recognised for their work in rebel-controlled Syria.

The citation reads that by performing search and rescue missions for innocent civilians in times of crises, the volunteer organisation has shown true bravery in attempting to garner peace in a war torn country.

The White Helmets’ selection is a testament to the enormous bravery and courage shown by these ordinary Syrians who have saved upwards on 100,000 people.

They are made up of volunteers from all walks of life. Many have paid the ultimate price for their compassion – 192 have been killed while saving others.
