At the 74th time of asking, Sergio Garcia is a major winner.

The Spaniard won The Masters late last night after a gripping playoff victory over England’s Justin Rose at Augusta National.

Rose looked on course to win his second major title when he held a two shot lead on the 13th hole over Garcia, who had to take a drop from the trees after a wayward drive.

But he scrambled to save par, and that was the catalyst for a stunning finish to his round which included an eagle on the 15th.

The pair were tied on the final hole and both players missed makeable birdie putts seal the win, but it was Garcia who went on to win the sudden death playoff.

The victory was made even sweeter for the 37 year old as it fell on the 60th birthday of legendary Spanish golfer Seve Ballesteros.

Garcia had 22 top 10 major finishes without a win.

Meanwhile a round of 69 was enough for Rory McIlroy to finish in a tie for 7th – his fourth straight top 10 finish at Augusta.
