Upper House likely to discuss latest Shatter controversy.

The Seanad now looks set to row into the row over the cancellation of a Dáil debate on a Commission of Investigation.

The Ceann Comhairle's defending his decision not to allow the debate after former Justice Minister Alan Shatter wrote to him over the terms of reference to be debated for the inquiry into the handling of alleged Garda malpractice.

Mr Shatter insisted debating the Commission could threaten his legal action against the findings of the Guerin report.

Fianna Fail Leader Michael Martin has criticised the decision, but he had this to say when asked if that meant he would vote no confidence in the Ceann Comhairle.

Despite the same standing orders on sub judice matters applying in the Seanad, Fianna Fáil Senator Averil Power says they will be pushing for a full debate.
