Thousands expected to take part in campaign of water protests.

The Anti Water Charges campaign says it expects more than 100 thousand people to take to the streets in protest tomorrow.

Over 80 demonstrations will go ahead tomorrow to voice opposition to the water charges which officially came into force at the beginning of this month.

They include rallys at 5 locations in Tipperary; Nenagh, Roscrea, Carrick on Suir, Cashel and Tipp Town.

It comes amid reports that the government is looking at ways to reduce the cost burden on households.

The Economic Management Council met for several hours yesterday to discuss water charges, with the coalition under pressure to extend a freeze on the assessed charge and provide relief for families with dependent children.

Reports today suggest that the government is considering granting a €100 tax credit for water for every household; however nothing has been confirmed as yet.

Tomorrows demonstrations include 5 locations in Tipperary; Nenagh, Roscrea, Carrick on Suir, Cashel and Tipp Town.

The Right2Water campaign is backed by unions including Mandate and UNITE – but SIPTU won't be taking part.

Its General President Jack O'Connor says scrapping the charge would mean raising the money through taxation at a greater cost to the pubic.

However, Tipperary Independent TD Seamus Healy says that when metering takes place in every house, the water bills will be higher.
