Motorists reminded to slow down this bank holiday weekend

During the first 3 and a half hours of the initiative between 7am to 10.30am, Gardaí checked 20,227 vehicles.

In the last hour, Gardaí detected one motorist travelling at 81 kilometres per hour, in an 50 kilometre zone on the N80 Tullow Road in Carlow. While, officers also caught a vehicle travelling at 114 kilometres per hour, in an 80 kilometre zone, on the N21 at Rathkeale in Limerick.

Checkpoints will be mounted across the country over the weekend and Gardaí are urging motorists to slow down.

Brian Farrell from the RSA has this advice for people taking the roads this afternoon:

“Set off early, give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination, don't forget to factor in some breaks along the route” he said.

“For anyone who has got a long journey ahead of them, they can maybe stop into one of the 17 participating Applegreen service stations that are giving away free cups of coffee to stave off the effects of driver fatigue” he added.
