Garda injured following high-speed chase in Cork

Over 20 officers were involved in the operation which was sparked when officers spotted a van that had been stolen yesterday and which they believed was later used in a burglary in the Glanmire area.

Gardaí signalled the driver to stop but the van drove on and at one stage drove on the wrong side of the Mallow road dual carriageway before Gardaí boxed him in.

One man was arrested at the scene, while another man – believed to be the driver of the vehicle – fled the scene on foot. A search operation is underway.

A garda came off his motoribike during the operation and suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Photographer and journalist Billy Magill was at the scene…

“I saw this high speed chase coming down towards me and I counted approximately 13 garda cars…with their flashing lights on” he said.

“I thought at the start that they were escorting, perhaps, this white van, but in reality that were chasing it”.

“I continued on the road and I've just come across the policeman who's been rammed – he's lying on the road unconscious” he added.
