Emergency committee meeting at South Tipp General

Yesterday the number of patients stuck on trolleys soared to 29 but today that number has dropped back down to two.

It follows confirmation from the HSE that funding to open extra beds at Our Lady's Hospital in Cashel has not been put in place.

Overcrowding at South Tipp General has been an ongoing problem in recent months, with numbers regularly reaching into the high 20's and 30's on occasion.

Daily figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives organisation show that both hospitals that cater for Tipperary, South Tipp General and University Hospital in Limerick are struggling to meet demand.

Billy's father had a heart attack on Monday and was taken to the Clonmel hospital where he was treated on a trolley for over 24 hours until he was finally moved to a ward last night.

He says that the situation is unacceptable.

Susan had a sick relative in the Clonmel hospital for three days on a trolley…she was discharged and is now recovering at home but Susan says the experience was very degrading for her with tens of people stuck in cramped spaces.

The HSE Forum South heard last week that 12 beds will be opened up at Our Lady's Hospital in Cashel to help alleviate the problem…however, in a statement to Tipp FM, the HSE says that no decision has been made on when this will happen and if funding is available.

Local Government representatives have been heavily criticised for the lack of action on the situation at South Tipp General…

Independent TD Seamus Healy raised the matter once again in the Dáil with the Taoiseach….however; the Deputy now believes that it's time for the public to take action.

In a statement to Tipp FM this afternoon, South Tipperary Fine Gael Junior Minister Tom Hayes says that the availability of the beds in Cashel is reliant on funding from the HSE under the Transitional Scheme…he adds that this funding is due to be allocated shortly and Minister Hayes has made representations to the HSE on behalf of Cashel in relation to this funding.

He also says he has made contact with the HSE and pressed the need for the process to be speeded up, in order to alleviate the enormous pressure on South Tipp General Hospital.
