County Board says Lowry one ‘of a number’ of sponsors for Tipp hurlers

The hurling body is coming under fire from a number of quarters after the Tipperary TD revealed via Twitter that he had secured the supply of suits for the Sunday night banquet in Dublin.

However speaking to Tipp FM- County Board Chairman Sean Nugent said they wouldn't be commenting further as their focus is on Sunday's match and bringing home the Liam McCarthy.

Speaking on Tipp Today following a backlash on a number of social media sites Michael Lowry stated that he was approached by the County Board chairman after the Cork win about supplying new suits for the players for the All Ireland weekend.

He said it wasn't due to his political standing but instead pointed out that he was heavily involved in local GAA circles both on and off the pitch over the years.

In a statement, the County Board acknowledged that they sought sponsors in the run up to the clash with Kilkenny to offset the excessive costs of reaching an All Ireland.

It pointed out that Deputy Lowry was just one of many of those who were approached – as they also received casual wear from Mr Mister for the players to wear for the Monday night homecoming, as well as receiving various items of sports gear from O'Neill's Sports.

While the board doesn't state if all politicians in the county were approached – Speaking to Tipp FM this afternoon the County Board Chairman said they receive financial support from several different sources including the Diaspora and Tipperary Supporters Club.

Sean Nugent added that he wouldn't be commenting further on the issue as their focus was on Sunday’s match and not peripheral matters.
