Call for further talks on Nenagh gas project

The project, which includes the upgrading of the water and waste water pipes, along with gas installation is set to continue for at least another ten months.

Phase three of the 17 million euro project got underway at the end of May.

Ervia began their dig, which is incorporating gas, water and sewerage, on the lower part of Kenyon Street in May.

Ahead of the project getting underway local business people had expressed concerns about how this would impact on their trade.

Some traders said they had lost up to 30% of their normal revenue during the first week of the works.

Speaking on Tipp Today, Peter Ward of Country Choice said while there had been consultation between the local authority, Gas Network Ireland and local businesses, the impact was much greater than they expected.

However the impact on trade hasn't been as bad in other parts of the town it would seem.

Noelle Morrissey of Eason on Pearse Street says they haven't felt the impact as much as traders on Kenyon Street.

She says the provision of free parking at Nenagh Railway station has proved popular.

With the project set to continue well into next year it's feared the remaining works will have an even greater impact.

Peter Ward says there will have to be further discussions before they move on to the next phase.
